To Yoga or not to Yoga. That is the question!

To Yoga or not to Yoga. That is the question!

As a beginner, it is normal to have a tonne of questions about yoga. This helpful blog will likely (hopefully) provide the answers to the questions you have been wondering! Plus, remember, yoga is a personal journey, and it's okay to have questions as you explore and deepen your practice. Don't hesitate to chat with your yoga instructor and fellow practitioners!

Yoga was conceived many years ago for mental well-being as it emphasizes mind over body. Yoga includes techniques like breath awareness, directing gaze (Drishti) to specific points, and concludes with Pranayama or Meditation. Big words huh?

Often, all beginners in Yoga have the same thoughts, so this may help you. So, in no particular order off we go!

Thought number One – I know it’s kinda of a no-brainer but, what do you wear?

  • This is easy: Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Many people prefer leggings or yoga pants and a comfortable top. Avoid clothing that is too loose or restrictive. Trackies and a t-shirt and more that ok!

Thought number Two: Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?

  • Look, if you have your own, fabulous, but if you are joining a class in a gym, they have them. It’s always preferable to have your own, but if you are just trying out to see if it’s for you, check out if you can borrow one. It's always a good idea to bring your own mat for hygiene reasons, but some studios may provide mats, however it's common for students to bring their own.

Thought number Three: What type of yoga is best for beginners?

  • Hatha yoga or beginner-level classes are often recommended for those new to yoga. These classes focus on basic poses, alignment, and breathing techniques.
  • Yin Yoga is fabulous for stretching and all over wellbeing.

Thought number Four: Is yoga a good workout?

  • Yes! Yoga can be a great workout. It improves strength, flexibility, and balance. Some styles, like Vinyasa or Power Yoga, can be more physically demanding. Or Yin Yoga is amazing for flexibility and lymphatic systems.

Thought number Five: How often should I practice yoga?

The frequency of practice depends on your personal goals and schedule. Starting with 2-3 sessions per week is a good foundation. Consistency is more important than intensity. Even if you do one class a week. That will always help!

Thought number Six: How do I choose the right yoga class for me? Hot Yoga, or Yin Yoga?

  • Experiment with different styles and classes to find what resonates with you. Beginners might start with a basic class or a beginner's workshop.
  • If there is class, try it out! See what takes your fancy! It must be right for you!

Thought number Seven: What if I'm not flexible? Can I still do yoga?

Absolutely! Yoga is for everyone, regardless of flexibility. Regular practice can improve flexibility over time. It's about progress, not perfection. If you want to increase your flexibility, or ‘bend-iness’, this is the class for you! You will always improve your personal range of flexibility with yoga over time! Remember, it’s not just about doing the splits, but about the mind and mindful breathing! Patience will lead to skills that promote calmness, focus, and rationale, all of which will enhance your daily life.

Thought number Eight: Should I eat before a yoga class?

Breakfast is always a good idea. Not a heavy breakfast your normal cereal and tea or coffee is fabulous. A light snack an hour or two before can be okay. Eat light so your stomach isn't full while twisting and bending. Just remember to stay well hydrated, before and after class.

Thought number Nine:  How often should I practice yoga?

  • The frequency of practice depends on your personal goals and schedule. Starting with 1-2 sessions per week is a good foundation. Consistency is more important than intensity.

Thought number Ten:  How do I know if I'm doing a pose correctly?

  • Pay attention to the instructor's cues on alignment and ask for feedback. It's normal for poses to feel challenging at first, but proper alignment is key to avoiding injuries. Just ask, or they will observe and correct you!

So, whatever your question or thoughts about Yoga, just give it a go. Strive for balance in life, make time for both exercise andYoga as they really complement each other!
